My Story – the ‘Why’ of Balance HR

Balance HR assist employers, employees and job seekers find work/life balance!

Why?

7 years ago, I consistently worked 12 hours a day.  I was a high-performing consultant in one of the largest recruitment companies in the world.  I loved my job, so it didn’t feel like ‘work’ – but it did take up most of my time.  I was competitive, and wanted to be the best at what I did, that is what motivated me.

4 years ago, I was married and pregnant – my goals hadn’t changed.  I still wanted to be successful in my job; but I knew my motivation was going to change.

My son was born in September 2014, I returned to work when he was 10 weeks old.  Back to full-time in January.  Things had changed, I now worked no more that 8 hours a day, but that still meant up to 10 hours away from my son each day.

My problem was that I could now see the challenge in trying to balance work and life as a parent.  I still wanted to be successful in my job, but I also wanted to spend as much quality time as possible with my son – I was consistently conflicted – why did I always feel guilty?  I felt I was always letting someone down . . .

My employer knew I was a new mum, they were sympathetic and supportive; but I now know there was more they could have done to support me.  I didn’t solve my problem, instead I moved jobs a couple of times thinking the answer would be within a new job; but it wasn’t!

In November 2017 I had the opportunity to start a new role – so I am now doing something I am passionate about, and I feel most companies, (and working parents) need.  I strive for my version of work/life balance every day, changing my habits (slowly).  I am now an advocate, and a promoter of flexible work.

We all talk about the importance of balance, wellness, and flexible work; but in most organisations these are just ‘policies’ on paper, (some don’t even have the policies).  They don’t know how to implement them, and employees are too afraid to initiate the conversation . . . due to fear of losing the job that they now can’t afford to lose (don’t get me started on the cost of childcare).  It is 2018, technology can support the move to more flexible work places – what is holding you back?

I am a passionate recruitment leader, based in Brisbane.  I love to help clients find the right person for their organisation, and help candidates find the ‘best fit’ for them.

I am mum to a threenager; and I understand the battle to find work/life balance.  I call a spade a spade, and I’m a huge Rugby League fan.

I believe in Results Orientated Working Environments, equal pay for equal work, and the ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality.
